Blazers Tie for First at AASU Invite

Witcher claims fourth career victory

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Valdosta State shot a final round 308 ( 20) to finish tied for first at the AASU/Southbridge Pirate Invitational Tuesday at the par 72, 6,922 yard Southbridge Golf Club.

VSU's Brent Witcher fired a four-under 68 in the final round to claim medalist honors with a three-round total of 207 (nine-under). The senior easily out-distanced Newberry's Daniel Stanley, who finished second with a two-under 214. The victory marked the fourth time in his career Witcher finished first in a tournament.

The Blazers entered Tuesday's final round with a 10 stroke lead over Lander, who finished second after recording one of only three teams scores, out of the 12 schools competing, under 300 on the day. LU and VSU tied with a 31-over 895 for the tournament, edging host Armstrong Atlantic by a single stroke. Newberry was fourth with a 901 ( 37) while Coker and Georgia College tied for fifth at 903 ( 39).

Valdosta State's Chesley Gunn finished tied for 13th in the event with a 226 ( 10) while Wade Holland tied for 32nd at 234 ( 18). Chad Smith was a stroke behind and tied for 36th while Cole Willis finished tied for 42nd with a 237 ( 21).

The Blazers return to action March 15 when they host the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
