Blazers Take 10-Stroke Lead at AASU

Witcher leads individual standings

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Valdosta State shot a two round total of 587 ( 11) to take a 10 stroke lead after the first day of play at the AASU/Southbridge Pirate Invitational, being held at the par-72, 6,922-yard Southbridge Golf Club Monday.

The Blazers fired an opening round 295 ( 7) to tie with Newberry before shooting a four-over 292 in the second round of the day to claim the lead. Newberry and Lander tied for second on the day with a 21-over 597 while host Armstrong Atlantic was fourth with a 598 ( 22). Georgia College rounded out the top five with a 601 ( 25).

VSU's Brent Witcher was one of only two golfers to shoot under par on the day, finishing the day with a five-under 139 to claim the individual lead for the tournament. Witcher began the day with a three-under 69 despite teeing off in 29 degree temperatures and with frost on the ground. He followed with a two-under 70 to best Georgia College's Niclas Johannson by three strokes for the overall lead.

Chesley Gunn was five-over par with a 149 and tied for 12th in the event while Cole Willis shot a 152 ( 8) to stand tied for 18th. Chad Smith and Wade Holland were one stroke behind and tied for 24th overall.

The tournament concludes with a single round of play on Tuesday. The Blazers tee off beginning at 10:00 a.m.
