VSU Announces New Blazer Radio Network
VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State Athletics will be accessible by an unprecedented number of listeners during the 2009-2010, according to a new network of stations announced by VSU Director of Athletics Herb Reinhard Tuesday.
The new Blazer Radio Network encompasses six stations in the South Georgia and North Florida area and will be headlined by Talk 92.1-96.3, WDDQ-FM, which will be in its second year as the flagship station for the Blazers. In addition to 92.1-96.3 FM combination, VSU football, basketball and baseball will also be carried by the new "The Jock 910 AM" sports channel in the Valdosta market as well as on Quitman's WSFB 1490AM and 97.7FM channels will also simulcast the WDDQ signal for all three sports.
"Every man, woman and child associated with Smalltown Broadcasting and our small family of stations is proud beyond belief to be the flagship stations for everything Blazers," said Scott James, owner and operator of Smalltown Broadcasting LLC, which runs Talk 92.1-96.3 FM, WSFB 1490AM-97.7FM and The Jock 910 AM. "We hope to again grow the coverage and exposure of these fine athletic programs and will try to mirror the level of excellence exhibited by their coaches, athletes and staff."
Coverage of VSU football will also be carried by Valdosta's WHLJ Foxy 97.5FM, whose signal reaches as far north as Nashville, Ga. and covers nine counties in North Florida. Two additional 25,000 watt stations also join the lineup for the 2009 football season in the form of Tifton's WKZZ 92.5FM, which joined the Blazer Radio Network in 2008, and Hazlehurst's WVOH 93.5FM. The combined signal of the three 25,000 watt stations provides VSU football with a listening area that encompasses nearly the entire South Georgia and North Florida area, with coverage stretching from Cochran, Ga. across the state to Statesboro and Hinesville, as far west as Albany, Ga. and south to Lake City, Fla. Overall, coverage of Valdosta State football will be available to 1.5 million listeners.
"WHLJ Foxy 97.5FM's owners and management are very proud to be a part of the Blazer Radio Network," commented station general manager Warren Lee on Tuesday.
John Higgs, President and General Manager of Broadcast South LLC, which owns and operates WKZZ 92.5FM and WVOH 93.5FM added, "Broadcast South is elated about being a part of the Blazer Radio Network. Our listeners in and around the greater Tifton and Hazlehurst areas can enjoy exciting football action throughout the season while forging an even closer bound with our regional university here in South Georgia."
In addition to the game coverage, Blazer fans in the Valdosta area will also be able to catch new Coaches Shows and additional Valdosta State sports coverage on the new Jock 910AM.
"We are extremely pleased with our new radio network," said Reinhard in making the announcement. "We have addressed some of the shortcoming in signal strength that we encountered this past year and are extremely excited about the new stations that will help us reach out to our alumni throughout South Georgia and North Florida.
"The addition of Foxy is a tremendous addition to our network and gives us a powerful local signal that carries into north Florida. The new AM/FM stations that Scott James and Smalltown Broadcasting are bringing on board will provide a wonderful opportunity for some of our sports and events that don't normally get coverage. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Scott and Smalltown Broadcasting."
