VSU Heads to Savannah for Holiday Classic

The Lady Blazers face Columbus State and Armstrong Atlantic State

This weekend the Lady Blazers travel to Savannah, Ga. to face Columbus State and Armstrong Atlantic State in the Armstrong Atlantic State Chatham Orthopedics Holiday Classic. VSU will face off against CSU at 1 p.m. on Friday and battle the host, AASU, at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Here are the Lady Blazer Bits:

Columbus State
- The Lady Blazers have only faced Columbus State twice, but Valdosta State pulled through for a victory in each meeting.
- The last meeting between the two teams came last season, Dec. 1st, at the Complex. VSU won a tight game by three points, 56-53. The only Lady Blazer to score in double figures was Ewelina Gad who went off for 17 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Two scored in double figures for Columbus State: Turelle Jones scored 15 points and Maria Grimes put in 10. Neither team shot more than 40 percent from the field.
- Valdosta State's only other meeting with Columbus State took place early in the 2001-02 season, a 10-16 year for VSU. The team still pulled out another close victory in an offensive shootout, 81-76.
- Columbus State will be the first game Valdosta State has played on a neutral court this season. So far the Lady Blazers are 1-1 away and a stellar 6-0 at home.

Armstrong Atlantic State
- Valdosta State is a little more familiar with the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State than the team is with Columbus State. The two teams have met 12 times dating back to the 1987-88 season under VSU Head Coach Charles Cooper.
- VSU has won 75 percent of the meetings to date, holding a 9-3 edge in the series.
- Last time the teams met was also last season. In the third game of the season on Nov. 17, the Lady Blazers beat the Pirates, 66-54. Michelle Thompson scored 11 points in the contest while Khaleh Thomas put in 12. Leschelle Matthews led the team in rebounding with seven. The Pirates' Lindsey Homes scored 18 to be the only double-digit scorer for AASU. Kaneetha Gordon led all rebounders with 12. VSU's stifling defense held AASU to 33.3 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range.
- VSU averages 76.9 points against AASU with a high of 113 in 1987 and a low of 45 during the 2002-03 season. The Pirates average 54 points in the series with a high of 69 in the same game VSU scored just 45, and a low of 28 in the 1988-89 season.
- Cooper, Jane Williamson, Yvette Sparks and Kiley Hill all have coached against AASU.
