Ouachita Baptist Game Notes

Blazers, Tigers play Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Today's Game: Valdosta State begins Gulf South Conference play as it hosts Ouachita Baptist in Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The Blazers are 2-0 and coming off of a two week lay-off after last week's game was postponed by Hurricane Ike while OBU has gone 2-0, including a 41-17 defeat of West Georgia last week.

The Blazers are averaging 444.0 yards of total offense and 35.0 points per game while giving up 6.0 points and 220.5 yards of total offense. Chris Hart has thrown for 279 yards and four touchdowns on the season while Markus Manson leads the running game with 125 yards and a score. Larry Dean has tallied 17 tackles, including 3.0 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss, to lead the defense while Sherard Reynolds and Carlos Anderson have 12 tackles each.

Ouachita Baptist averages 49.5 points and 518.0 yards of total offense while its defense is giving up 12.0 points and 329.0 yards a game. K.J. Johnson is averaging 131.5 yards a game and has four touchdowns on the year while Terrence Garret leads the defense with 13 tackles.

The 2008 season marks the 27th year of VSU football while the Ouachita Baptist game will be the 301st game in school history. The Blazers have won 203 contests, lost 93 and tied four times, a winning percentage of .683.

A Brief Look at the Series: Valdosta State leads the all-time series 8-0 in a series that dates back to November 4, 2000. The Blazers won the first game 49-21 and also claimed a 37-3 win last season in Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Valdosta State has never won by fewer than 21 points and has won by an average of nearly 31 points per game over the first eight games.

Last year, the Blazers rushed for 301 yards, its highest rushing total since the 2001 season, in its win. Michael Terry tallied scoring runs of 56 and 69 yards in the contest while the Blazer offense outgained the Tigers 519 to 258. Roger King also returned a punt 61 yards for a score.
