VSU Falls 5-2 in National Semifinals
Lady Blazers end season 17-6
HOUSTON, Texas - Lynn built a 4-0 lead before staving off a Valdosta State comeback bid as the Knights defeated the Lady Blazers 5-2 in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament Friday morning at Memorial Park.
LU raced out to a 3-0 lead as it claimed all three doubles points. Alisson Siaci and Eleonora Ianozzi opened the scoring with an 8-4 victory over Hollie Bees and Natali Gumbrecht at No. 3. At No. 2, Magdalena Ekert and Katerina Jiskrova raced out to a 6-1 advantage over Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon before dropping the next three games. The Lynn duo recovered to eventually claim an 8-5 win for the matches second point while Victoria Weltz and Alexandra Schunk won five of the final six games for a 9-7 victory over Dominique Rothlaender and Tina Trautmann at No. 1.
Ekert pushed the Knight lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 lead over Bees at No. 5 singles before VSU began its comeback bid. Gumbrecht quickly defeated Jiskrova 6-2, 6-1 for the first VSU point while Rothlaender downed Weltz 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Durante was serving for match point over Schunk at No. 2 and Trautmann won her first set and was leading 6-5 in the second at No. 4 when Ianozzi ended the match with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Redon at No. 6 singles.
Valdosta State ended its season with a 17-6 record.
