VSU Holds Courtyard by Marriott Crossover Tournament

VALDOSTA, Ga.- Head Coach Sia Poyer has officially announced the Valdosta State Volleyball schedule for the 2008 season.

"We are looking forward to this season", Poyer said. "We are going to be playing a lot more home games this year and the teams we are playing are all very competitive."

The Lady Blazers open their season at the Francis Marion Tournament in Florence, SC at the end of August where they will take on Francis Marion, Converse, Arkansas-Monticello and Concord.

VSU plays their first home game on September 2 at 6 pm against Flagler in the PE Complex, followed by a trip to Melbourne, Fla. where they will take part in the Florida Tech Tournament. The team will face opponents from Converse, Florida Tech, Saint Leo and Northwood.

After two home games on September 10th and 17th against Eckerd and Albany State, VSU opens up Gulf South Conference play at West Alabama on September 19th. The Lady Blazers then travel to Montevallo and West Florida.

For the first time ever, VSU is hosting a Crossover with GSC and Sunshine State Schools, the Courtyard by Marriott VSU Crossover Tournament, where teams from both conferences will face each other. Gulf South Conference teams include Alabama-Huntsville, Montevallo and West Georgia while the SSC teams are Rollins, Saint Leo, Florida Tech and Lynn.

Poyer and his team are excited about the tournament. "This tournament is a great way for the GSC and SSC schools to play each other, since most of us are so far away from one another. It's also a bonus that the games we now play against SSC schools count as in-region games so a win could really help our regional ranking."

After the home tournament, VSU hosts their first GSC game against West Georgia on September 30th at 7 pm in the PE Complex.

VSU then has a six-game road trip where they will take on non-conference Flagler, Barry, Fort Valley and Albany State as well as North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville.

Poyer and the Lady Blazers will hold their annual VSU Blazer Volleyball Alumni Match on Homecoming Saturday at 10 am.

The team returns to action on October 21 at 6 pm when they host West Florida. VSU keeps the GSC action going on October 24th and 25th when they host West Alabama and Montevallo.

In their final road game of the regular season, VSU travels to UWG on October 28th only to return home on the 31st to take on Armstrong Atlantic State at 6 pm.

Wrapping up GSC play, VSU hosts North Alabama and UAH on November 7th and 8th, respectively.

Senior Night will be on November 10th against Fort Valley State, marking the final home game of the year.

The GSC Tournament begins on November 14th and the NCAA Tournament starts on November 20th.

"The girls are really excited about this upcoming year. We have a great group of girls returning and some impressive newcomers," stated Poyer. "It is going to be a great season."
