Blazers Blank Pirates 6-0

VSU registers seventh shutout of season

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State defeated Armstrong Atlantic 6-0, its seventh shutout of the season, in non-conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Tuesday evening.

Valdosta State (31-15-1) got on the board first as it scored in the bottom of the first inning. Logan Pierce walked to open the frame before moving to second when Jon Koenigsfeld was hit by a pitch. Daniel Muniz laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base, allowing Pierce to score on Blaine Wilson's base hit to center.

VSU upped its advantage to 4-0 in the fourth inning as it scored three runs with two out in the frame. Chase Blackwood singled to open the frame and moved to second on a fielding error by Pirate centerfielder Michael Price. A Sho Kohata single moved Blackwood to third before Pierce loaded the bases with a walk. Koenigsfeld proceeded to work a full count before singling up the middle to plate Blackwood and Kohata. AASU reliever Sam Dotson came on and appeared to get out of the inning, but his throw to first on a Muniz grounder was over the head of first baseman Joey Davis, allowing Pierce to score.

The Blazers added two more runs in the fifth on a Kohata sacrifice fly and a Pirate fielding error that allowed Blackwood to score to close out the scoring in the game.

Russ Crum started for the Blazers and allowed two hits while striking out three in a pre-determined three innings of work to improve to 3-0. Blackwood collected two hits while also scoring a pair of runs to lead VSU offensively.

Jeff Chase surrendered three hits and a run in an inning and a third to fall to 4-5 for Armstrong Atlantic (24-18). Michael Price tallied two of the Pirates seven hits to lead AASU offensively.

Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, April 23 at 5:00 p.m. when it hosts St. Leo in Billy Grant Field in the Blazers final home contest of the 2008 season.
