Men's and Women's Tennis Defeat Flagler

Women win 7-2, men win 8-1

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- The Valdosta State men's and women's teams defeated Flagler College in a non-conference match on Saturday night, with the men winning 8-1 and the women winning 7-2.

The Valdosta State men (2-0) won two-of-three doubles matches. Joerg Ekkenga and Leos Jelinek won 8-5 at #1 doubles while Florian Halb and Otto Lenhart were victorious at the #3 spot.

Halb and Jelinek each picked up another win at singles, with Halb winning 7-5, 6-2 at #1 and Jelinek with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #2. Richard Malobicky was victorious at #3 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win while Lenhart almost pulled off a sweep at #4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Ben Cattan defeated Flagler at #5 singles, 6-2, 6-0 while Michael Keuch only played one set at #6 singles and won 8-3. VSU took home an 8-1 victory, picking up their second win of the season.

The Lady Blazers (2-0) were just as victorious, with all three doubles teams defeating the Lady Saints. Dominique Rothlaender and Tina Trautman won 8-2 at #1, Karine Redon and Raphaelle Durante won at #2 8-3 and Natali Gumbrecht and Hollie Bees were victorious at #3, 8-2.

Going into singles play with a 3-0 lead, the Lady Blazers did not let down. Rothlaender crushed her competition with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #1 singles while Sonya Haggstrom swept #5 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Redon went 6-1, 6-2 at #4 singles and Bees was victorious at the #3 spot, 6-2, 6-2. The Lady Blazers extend their record to 2-0 with a 7-2 defeat of Flagler.

Both teams travel to Lynn University tomorrow for 10:30 am matches.
