California (Pa.) Game Notes
Blazers, Vulcans play Saturday at 11 am
This Week's Game: Valdosta State travels to California (Pa.) in the NCAA Division II Semifinals. The Blazers, the Southeast Region champions, are 11-1 on the year while Cal, the Northeast champ, is 13-0.
VSU is averaging 430.4 yards and 40.6 points a game this season while giving up 334.8 yards and 16.9 points a game. Senior quarterback Willie Copeland has thrown for 2,700 yards and 24 touchdowns while sophomore wide receiver Cedric Jones has caught 82 passes for 1,003 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior linebacker William Montford leads the defense with 105 tackles.
California (Pa.) is averaging 36.8 points and 382.8 total yards a game while surrendering 10.2 points and 198.9 yards a contest. The Vulcans feature the top ranked defense in the nation.
The 2007 season marks the 26th year of Valdosta State football while the California (Pa.) game will be the 296th game in school history. The Blazers have won 199 contests, lost 93 and tied four times, a winning percentage of .681.
Television / Webcast: The game will be televised on ESPNU. Dave Armstrong will call the play-by-play while Jay Walker will provide commentary.
Blazer fans will be able to view the game at several places across South Georgia. Valdosta State students, faculty and staff can gather in the auditorium of the Continuing Education Building to watch the game. Additionally, Beef O'Brady's in both Valdosta and Suwanee, Ga. is working with the VSU Alumni Association to hold viewing parties while Loco's Grill and Pub in Valdosta and Albany will also hold viewing parties. Likewise, Charley O'Corley's in Remerton will have the game on its television sets.
Radio: WWRQ, 107.9 FM. Dick Rockey (play-by-play), Tom Odom (analysis) and Wes James (sideline) call the action. Fans can follow the action via the internet at www.rock108.fm.
The Series: Today's game marks the first ever appearance between Valdosta State and California (Pa.). The Blazers have faced off against a PSAC team only once before, defeating West Chester 45-21 in the 2004 National Semifinals.
The contest is VSU's third trip to the NCAA Division II semifinals, with the Blazers holding a 2-0 record in the previous two games.
