Lady Blazers Defeat West Georgia

Volleyball wins first conference match

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Valdosta State volleyball team took home a win against University of West Georgia, in their second Gulf South Conference match of the season while three players obtained double-doubles.

The Lady Blazers (5-10) defeated the Lady Wolves (8-7) in four sets, leading the entire first game and winning 30-17. VSU got off to a shaky start in game two, down by as many as six but after a huge dig by Nancy Marin and an ace by Niki Patriarca, the Blazers tied the game at 15. An ace by Stephanie Kirrstetter gave the Lady Blazers their first lead of the game 19-18. But after a few West Georgia kills, the Lady Blazers fell in game two 30-26.

The Lady Blazers out-hit and out-dug the Lady Wolves in game three with a .353 hitting percentage and 17 digs. With a strong lead the entire game, VSU took the game 30-23. Game four proved to be a defensive game as neither team hit above .250. The Lady Blazers started off strong, winning 9-5 but UWG caught up after some sloppy offense, tying the game at 10. The Lady Blazers led the rest of the game, winning 30-18.

Three players obtained double-doubles on the match. Laura Lee Atkinson led all players with 25 kills, a new season high,on 49 attempts with only five errors with a .408 hitting percentage, also adding 16 kills. Marin ended the match with 15 kills, a .406 hitting percentage and 14 kills while Kirrstetter netted 13 kills and 14 digs.

Brittney Borg led the defense with 18 digs while Amy Lou Meisen-Vehrs threw up 32 assists.

The Lady Blazers improve their record to 5-10, playing their next match at Albany State on September 18th at 6 p.m.
