Lady Blazers Finsh Fourth at St. Mary's Tournament

Lady Blazers fall to Orediggers and Rattlers


VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State Lady Blazers lost two close matches to Colorado School of Mines and St. Mary's University on Saturday afternoon at the St. Mary's Tournament in San Antonio, Texas, finishing the tournament in fourth place.

After losing the first and second games to CSM 30-25, the Lady Blazers (0-4) won the third game 30-26, hitting .255 on the game. But the Oredeiggers (1-2) were too much for the Lady Blazers to handle in the fourth game, with a final score of 30-25.

The Lady Blazers had impressive stats on the match with a .161 hitting percentage, eight service aces and 73 digs. Laura Lee Atkinson and Bentley Knox both had season high kills with 16 and 13, respectively. Atkinson also contributed 22 digs while Knox's hitting percentage was the team's highest, .367.

VSU was led by freshman Stephanie Kirrstetter with 17 kills, a .306 hitting percentage, three aces and 16 digs.

The Orediggers' Amanda Rebol led her team with 16 kills, .a 243 hitting percentage and 10 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Lady Blazers took St. Mary's to five close games. After losing the first game 32-30, VSU came back in game two by a score of 30-18 with a .500 hitting percentage. The Lady Blazers were defeated in game three (30-19) but forced a fifth game after winning 30-18 in game four. The Lady Blazers out-hit the Rattlers in game five with a .296 hitting percentage but it wasn't enough, falling 21-19.

For the match, the Lady Blazers out-blocked the Rattlers (3-1) with eight solo blocks, Knox and Kirrsteter with two a piece.Knox also contributed 12 kills and a .381 hitting percentag while Kirrstetter again led the Lady Blazers offense with 16 kills.

Atkinson, leading the Lady Blazers in kills this season with 48, had 13 kills, a .275 hitting percentage and led the team in digs with 16. Valerie Haven had 12 kills, 11 digs and led the team in hitting percentage with .440.

The Rattlers Samantha Weber led all players with 18 kills and a .680 hitting percentage while teammate Mallary Moehrig contributed 16 kills, a .231 hitting percentage and 16 digs.

VSU returns home on Thursday, August 31 to host the Ramada Limited Azalea Classic at 6 p.m. in the PE Complex.
