Valdosta State notches first ever win against North Alabama
VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State bounced back with a historical win against North Alabama Friday night. After dropping two straight, the Lady Blazers beat the Lions, 3-1, for the first time in 32 meetings.
The Lady Blazers dropped the first game, 23-25, but bounced back to win three consecutive games and the match. The win pushes VSU's record to 12-10 for the season and 3-4 in Gulf South action. North Alabama dropped to 14-13 and 3-3.
Valdosta State's defense shined bright Friday night as the team made 10 blocks. Tania Tauiliili had one solo and four assists while Irene Hannan had two solos and two assists.
The VSU defense held North Alabama's attacking percentage to just .129 and a -.026 in the final frame. Hannan had 18 digs and Ruthie King, despite missing some time in the match, put up 17 digs. Emelia Saulter was the other Lady Blazer with double-digit digs, finishing with 12.
Valdosta State's offensive power balanced the team defense. Saulter passed out 51 assists while Katie Onushko hit 14 kills. King and Hannan each had 13 while Arielle Parnell and Tauiliili each had eight.
The Lady Blazers will look for another win against Alabama-Huntsville at 2 p.m. in the P.E. Complex Saturday.
