VSU Pushes Harding to Five

Lady Blazers Fall, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 11-15

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Valdosta State faced the top team in the Gulf South West Division Sunday and proved that VSU belongs in the conversation of the top teams in the Gulf South Conference. In a back-and-forth match, Valdosta State pushed Harding to five games before falling in the final frame, 15-11, to drop to 11-9 on the season.

The Lady Blazers took the first set, 25-21, but dropped the second. Valdosta State bounced back to win the third game, but could not earn another win in the match despite two close games.

Four Lady Blazers tallied double-digit kills in the match with Ruthie King leading the way. She hit 20 kills and notched 11 digs. Irene Hannan had 15 kills and 14 digs. Hannan led the team with a .364 attacking percentage to help the Lady Blazers hit .406 in the first game and .312 in the third.

Katie Onushko contributed 14 kills while Tania Tauiliili had 10. Emelia Saulter passed out an eye-popping 60 assists, five more than the entire Harding team.

For Harding, Sarah Phipps had 17 kills. Two others were in double digits. Emily Tate had 16 digs and Amber Schinzing passed out 41 assists.

Valdosta State next plays at West Georgia at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and will return to the P.E. Complex Friday at 6 p.m. to face North Alabama.
