Lady Blazers Start 3-1

Valdosta State took two Saturday for a 3-1 start

CARROLLTON, Ga. - After splitting Friday, the Lady Blazers went undefeated Saturday. With a 3-2 win against South Carolina-Aiken and a 3-1 win over Barton, Valdosta State moved to 3-1 to start the season.

Valdosta State fell in the first two games against USC-Aiken, but came back to win two games by matching scores of 25-20. In the fifth frame, USC-Aiken pushed the Lady Blazers to the edge, but VSU won 21-19 to finish the match 17-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-20, 21-19.

Katie Onushko led the way in kills for VSU with 20. Both Irene Hannan and Ruthie King had 17 kills with Hannan turning in .433 attacking percentage. Hannan also had 10 digs while Emelia Saulter dished 50 times and had 11 digs.

Against Barton the Lady Blazers lost the first game again, this time in a close 26-24 battle. Valdosta State showed its mental toughness by coming from behind again. The Lady Blazers bounced back to win three straight games, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 to move to 3-1 on the year.

King finished with 16 kills and 19 digs to lead VSU in both categories while Hannan had 15 kills. Saulter was the only Lady Blazer with an assist all day and passed out 41 in the second match.

Valdosta State will be in action next at the Montevallo Classic September 5-6.
