Southern Arkansas Game Notes

Blazers, Muleriders play Saturday at 7 pm

Today's Game: Valdosta State looks to rebound from its opening season loss as the Blazers host Southern Arkansas in Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The game marks the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools, although SAU's season opener was against North Alabama, a non-league contest. Valdosta State is coming off of a 31-24 loss to Newberry, the Blazers' first loss in a season opener since the 2004 season. Meanwhile, UNA defeated Southern Arkansas 41-9 in the Muleriders' season opener. VSU compiled 411 yards of total offense against Newberry, but surrendered 470 total yards, including 333 through the air. Running back Ronnye Nelson led the offense as he picked up 25 yards on eight rushes while also catching a team-high six passes for 46 yards. Wide receiver Cedric Jones tallied four receptions and 72 yards while Larry Dean and Ratu Rabelo tallied 10 tackles each to pace the defensive unit. Southern Arkansas returns 34 letterwinners and 14 starters, including nine on offense and five on defense, off of its 2008 squad. The Muleriders tallied just 127 yards of total offense against North Alabama in their season opener, while allowing the Lions 381 total yards. SAU passed for 87 yards and threw for another 83 in the contest. Quarterback Ryan McCombie led the offense as he rushed for 19 yards on 11 carries while passing for 66 yards. Cedric Thornton and Maurice Thornton paced the defense with nine tackles each. The 2009 season marks the 28th year of Valdosta State football while the Southern Arkansas game will be the 312th game in school history. The Blazers have won 210 contests, lost 97 and tied four times, a winning percentage of .682.
