VALDOSTA, Ga. - The student-athletes of the Valdosta State men's and women's basketball programs put in countless hours of work in an effort to achieve their academic goals last semester, and they were well represented this week, as eight different student-athletes were listed on the 2017 GSC Winter Honor Roll and two Blazers earned All-Academic recognition.
The GSC All-Academic teams are selected by the conference's Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a vote. Nominees must be significant contributors to their squads, must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale, and may not be freshman or first-semester/quarter transfers.
One student-athlete from each program represented VSU on the list of All-Academic honorees.
Kenya Samone' Dixon, a senior foward for the Lady Blazers, was voted in after maintaining a 4.0 GPA with another perfect semester in the fall. Dixon hails from Baton Rouge, La. and served as a key component in VSU's impressive run to the Sweet Sixteen at the 2018 South Regional Tournament. With 14 double-doubles on the season, she claimed All-GSC honors for the second straight season.
Beau Justice of Blazer basketball joined Dixon as an All-Academic honoree in recognition of his 3.21 GPA as an Interdisciplinary Studies major. Justice earned All-American honors at the end of his junior campaign and was also recognized as the South Region Player of the Year and the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year. Valdosta State joined Christian Brothers to represent the only two institutions to land honorees from both men's and women's basketball.
In addition to the two aforementioned student-athletes voted to the GSC's All-Academic team, Valdosta State saw eight student-athletes named to the Gulf South Conference's Winter Honor Roll for having a 3.00 GPA or higher.
